NewsProtect Your Pet From Canine Influenza Virus (CIV)Due to the spread of CIV H3N8 to the Brown County area, Animal House veterinarians are recommending that all dogs be vaccinated to quell outbreaks and reduce reduce symptom severity. CIV is a infectious disease caused by a "flu" virus that causes respiratory illness. Symptoms include cough, fever, nasal discharge, lack of energy and loss of appetite. As the virus is fairly new, dogs have no natural immunity to it; about 80% of those exposed will show signs of infection. About 20% of dogs demonstrating symptoms will experience severe signs and may develop secondary infections such as pneumonia.CIV is spread only from dog to dog and does not cross species. Immunizing is particularly important for all dogs who participate in boarding, daycare, grooming, training or go to dog parks. A new vacinne has recently been introduced that is safe and effective. Beginning as early as the Thanksgiving Holiday weekend, CIV vaccine will be available at The Animal House. Due to the relative urgent nature of the illlness, The Animal House is offering a low cost vaccine package which includes the following: initial vaccine + booster, both immunizations will be preceded by a health check by an Animal House veterinarian. Total Cost of the CIV Vaccine Package is $22. Offer is extended until February 28, 2010. If you have further questions about CIV please contact one of our veterinarians at 920-465-4629.
